TAKE ME BACK TO BROOKLYN!
A trip to Brooklyn is like a trip around the world! One of the oldest established neighborhoods in New York, more than half the houses in Brooklyn Heights were built before 1860. Let us show you the hidden and priceless treasures of America’s first suburb on another incomparable Diversions’ day led by our expert tour guide.
Docent tour of the Brooklyn Museum of Art…Museum Mile’s Missing Marvel! The second-largest art collection in the U.S. boasts a spectacular Egyptian collection, an outstanding collection of American art dating back to colonial times and exquisite period rooms that display American interior design and decoration in pieces collected from up and down the east coast. Also featured in the galleries are stunning masterworks by Georgia O'Keeffe, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent to name a few.
Plymouth Church of the Pilgrim’s rich and intriguing history dates back to the 1800’s. The first pastor, abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, was instrumental in forging ties with the Underground Railroad, and the church was dubbed the “Grand Central Depot.” This is the only church in New York that Abraham Lincoln worshipped and many famous writers and activists spoke here including Martin Luther King Jr., Mark Twain, Clara Barton, and Charles Dickens.
Greenwood Cemetery –We’ll tour the picturesque streets that have been home to famous artists, politicians and businessmen en route to the cemetery that is the permanent residence to 560,000 of a Who’s Who of famous figures, including Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Morse, F.A.O. Schwarz, Civil War generals, baseball legends and “Boss” Tweed. It houses one of the largest outdoor collections of 19th- and 20th-century statuary and mausoleums. Jeffrey Richman, author of Brooklyn’s Greenwood Cemetery: New York’s Buried Treasure, will personally bring this cemetery “to life” with charismatic brilliance.
Visit the Home of Arnold Lehman, Director of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and former Director of our BMA. Lehman with gracious hospitality offers us a private entrée to his architecturally smashing residence with its breathtaking vistas of the New York skyline. You’ll also have an insider’s view of his remarkable collection of contemporary and modern art.
